Lucinda Brand is European cyclocross (veldrijden) champion after a jury changed the result of the women's elite race in Zeddam on Saturday. Marie Schreiber of Luxembourg crossed the line first, with Brand right behind her, but was placed second after a long deliberation.

The jury ruled that Schreiber drifted slightly to the left in the sprint and hindered Brand. Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado took bronze; she had fallen behind earlier in the race. It is Brand's second European title, after her win in 2021.

Schreiber, 23, would have been the first non-Dutch winner after eight Dutch European champions. After the jury's decision, Brand and Schreiber were called into the jury car, where the commissaires explained their ruling using the footage.

Brand, 37, did not file a protest. She said she told national coach Gerben de Knegt: "We don't need to ask for the footage, I'm fine with it." She added: "Marie was the best today and I simply wasn't fast enough in the sprint." The jury reviewed the footage on its own initiative.

Schreiber did not attend the podium ceremony, so the second step stayed empty. "I think it's disrespectful that the result of such a big race is decided by one person," she said. She said she did not do it on purpose and that even Brand felt she had done nothing wrong.

Brand said she understood Schreiber's anger. "This is obviously really gutting for her," she said. "I understand why she didn't want to go on the podium after that. Everyone deals with a disappointment like that in their own way."
