A KLM flight from Schiphol to Tel Aviv received a bomb threat on Thursday evening and did not continue its journey, a KLM spokesperson said. The aircraft stayed in the Romanian capital Bucharest and did not leave for Tel Aviv overnight from Thursday to Friday.

Stranded passengers were put up in hotels, and KLM is looking for replacement flights for them.

The plane left Schiphol at 16:40 and the threat came in at 19:30, KLM said. According to KLM, it made a planned stopover in Bucharest, where everyone on board had to leave the aircraft. Nothing was found and the plane was cleared, but a technical fault came to light just before departure and the flight was cancelled.

## Threats against European flights

Several false bomb threats have recently been made against European flights. The NCTV, the national counterterrorism and security coordinator, says it does not currently know where they come from. "So many bomb threats in such quick succession is striking, and the NCTV is giving it special attention," a spokesperson said. Unfortunately, such threats cannot be prevented, the spokesperson said. Airlines have special procedures for them, and they must always be taken seriously.

Air France-KLM chief executive Benjamin Smith spoke at the group's quarterly results presentation about the many bomb threats disrupting air traffic in Europe this week. He said he had never seen anything like it. The apparent coordination was new, he said, and he stressed that the group is well prepared for such threats.

## Background

- **NCTV (Nationaal Coördinator Terrorismebestrijding en Veiligheid)**: The National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security is a Dutch government office that coordinates the national approach to terrorism, extremism and threats to national security. It sits within the Ministry of Justice and Security and advises the government on threat levels and on how public and private parties should respond. It matters because it is the central body that brings together police, intelligence services and other partners when a national-level threat or incident needs a coordinated response.
