Prime Minister Rob Jetten says he does not see the coalition parties D66, VVD and CDA blocking a higher tax on wealth. He was speaking in the parliamentary tax debate, where the opposition plan was discussed.

The plan comes from the opposition parties PRO and Volt. In an amendment, they want to levy more tax on wealth and profits, in order to cut taxes on working people.

VVD MP Wendy van Eijk is not keen on it. She said the proposal clashes with the coalition agreement and called it “unthinkable” that the coalition of D66, VVD and CDA would approve the amendment.

Jetten did not take that as a block. “I've heard tonight from one of the coalition parties that they'll judge it on its merits,” he said.

The prime minister acknowledged that the step is difficult. “That's not an easy call. These are tough political choices, and they touch on the coalition agreement too,” he said. In his words, the coalition parties will have to weigh that up themselves.

## Background

- **VVD (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie)**: The liberal party on the centre-right, which favours free enterprise and lower taxes. It supplied the prime minister from 2010 to 2024 and is one of the three parties in the current cabinet, with D66 and the CDA.
- **PRO**: PRO is a Dutch political party that sits in the Tweede Kamer (the lower house of the Dutch parliament) as an opposition party, meaning it is not part of the governing coalition. In this context, it is one of the parties that tables proposals and amendments to government plans, such as raising taxes on wealth and profits to reduce the burden on working people.
- **Volt**: Volt is a political party that operates across Europe and has a Dutch branch, Volt Nederland, which holds seats in the Tweede Kamer. As an opposition party, it proposes its own amendments to government legislation, such as additional taxes on wealth and profits to lower the tax burden on working people.
