Rijkswaterstaat closed the Hollandsche IJsselkering at Krimpen aan den IJssel in South Holland on Sunday evening to protect the hinterland from high water. The barrier is expected to reopen on Monday at around 10:00.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, the barrier closes on average three to four times a year. It is one of the thirteen Deltawerken (Delta Works) and was the first one finished, five years after the 1953 flood disaster.

## Background

- **Rijkswaterstaat**: Rijkswaterstaat is the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, responsible for the national road and waterway network. It builds, maintains and manages the main water defences, storm surge barriers, locks and sluices, and it sets the rules for shipping and traffic on national highways and waterways. Its work on water safety and flood protection is a core part of how the Netherlands guards against high water.
