# Health insurance now costs about €157 a month, €31 more than in 2021

Basic health insurance costs €1,879 a year on average in 2026, per insured person, Vektis says. That is about €157 a month. In 2021 the average was €1,505 a year, about €125 a month.

## Flat in 2026

After rises of 6.6% in 2023, 5.9% in 2024 and 7.4% in 2025, the average premium went up only 0.2% in 2026, €3 a year. Vektis says premiums stayed relatively stable because of a one-off financial windfall and because insurers used their own reserves to dampen the premium.

## What to expect in 2027

The government expects the average premium to rise by €12.50 to €169 a month in 2027. The mandatory excess (eigen risico) rises from €385 to €400, and the healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) for single people rises to a maximum of €140 a month to largely offset the higher premium.
