The temperature fell below zero in parts of Brabant, Limburg and Zeeland in the night to Friday, making it the first local frost day of the autumn, according to the weather firm Weeronline. It came later than usual: Weeronline says the first local frost day fell around 25 October between 1996 and 2025.

It is not yet a nationwide frost day, which requires frost at De Bilt. There the KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, measured 0.8 degrees above zero. The southern readings are the first below zero at the standard observation height of 1.5 metres since 15 May. Ground frost came earlier, on 25 September, when -0.4 degrees was measured at the grass in Twente.

- Woensdrecht: -1.2
- Ell: -1.1
- Westdorpe: -0.4
- De Bilt: 0.8

Friday afternoon will be milder but still cold: 8 to 10 degrees, against a normal 11 to 12 for the time of year. Saturday will be colder, with a maximum of 6 or 7 degrees in the northeast and 8 to 10 in the south.

Last year the first local frost of the autumn came only on 16 November, in Eelde in Drenthe. In 2024 it came on 15 October, also in Eelde.

## Background

- **KNMI (Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut)**: The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute is the Dutch national weather and climate service. It makes weather forecasts and warnings and measures temperature, rainfall, wind and other conditions at weather stations across the country. Its official measurements, including those at De Bilt, are the reference used for weather records and for official definitions such as a frost day.
