# Farm shed destroyed by fire in Berkel en Rodenrijs, fire brigade urges residents to keep windows shut

A large fire broke out on the Noordeindseweg in Berkel en Rodenrijs, just north of Rotterdam, in the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the safety region said. The fire brigade said the farm shed was completely destroyed and the heat damaged cars.

The fire brigade advises people to keep windows and doors closed and to switch off mechanical ventilation. Heavy smoke drifted north, and people in Zoetermeer have complained about the smell.

Several fire brigade units fought the fire to stop it spreading to other buildings. The brigade also used a drone for inspections.

Spokesman René van der Linden of Veiligheidsregio Rotterdam said the police will investigate the cause of the fire during the morning. "A fully developed fire in the middle of the night raises questions," he said.

## An earlier fire on the same site

Two years ago a fire also broke out in a shed on the same site. A drug lab was found in the shed, and a body was found in a car there. Two men were sentenced to just over 3 years in prison.

Because of that earlier case, the fire brigade said it searched "very carefully" after this second fire, so as not to face surprises. Van der Linden said of the farm: "They were just getting it all built up again. But they can now do it all over again."
