The climate action group Extinction Rebellion (XR) has taken the police and the Dutch state to court. It wants the court to force officers to wear clear identification at demonstrations.

XR says that without clear identification it is hard to file effective complaints about what it calls "excessive police violence" (buitensporig politiegeweld).

Earlier this year, a judge said it was not possible to prosecute anyone for the broken wrist of a detained XR demonstrator. The judge said it could not be established which officers were involved.

## Background

- **Extinction Rebellion (XR)**: Extinction Rebellion is an international climate activist movement that uses nonviolent civil disobedience, such as road blockades and public demonstrations, to press governments to act on climate change and biodiversity loss. In the Netherlands its protests, often held in The Hague and Amsterdam, regularly lead to discussion between the group, the police and the authorities about how demonstrations should be policed.
