An explosion was heard on the Kuperssingel in Leusden just after midnight on Thursday night. Shortly afterwards, a fire was reported in an apartment block, according to Veiligheidsregio Utrecht, the region's emergency-services body.

The fire brigade declared it a large fire (grote brand). It sent three fire engines and a rescue vehicle, the safety region said on X.

"The fire brigade is fighting the fire and is trying to get it under control as quickly as possible," the safety region said.

The fire was out at around 02:30, a spokesperson for the safety region said. It produced a lot of smoke, and photos show several apartments heavily damaged.

According to the spokesperson, ambulance staff checked several people because they had inhaled smoke.

## Background

- **Veiligheidsregio Utrecht**: The Utrecht safety region is one of the regional bodies in the Netherlands that coordinate emergency services, such as the fire brigade, crisis management and medical assistance, for the municipalities in the province of Utrecht. It acts as a joint organisation of those municipalities, so when an incident needs several services to work together, it leads or supports the response and informs the public. Its role is to plan for, prevent and manage disasters and emergencies in the region.
