The European gas price rose above €90 per megawatt hour on Tuesday for the first time since 2022.

Energy prices have been rising since the start of the American and Israeli attacks on Iran and that country's counter-actions in the Middle East.

The average variable gas price for households was €0.6618 per cubic metre including VAT in September 2026, figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) show. That follows €0.6526 in August and €0.6277 in July. The lowest price in the past 13 months was €0.5641 in April 2026, and it has risen every month since. In September 2025 it was €0.6269.

**What this means for you**

- A fixed tariff (vast tarief) keeps the price per kWh or m3 the same for the contract period, for example 1 or 3 years, and the supplier may charge a cancellation fee (opzegvergoeding) if the contract is ended early.
- After a fixed contract ends, it becomes a variable tariff (variabel tarief), and the supplier must announce the new rates at least 30 days ahead.
- A variable tariff lets the supplier change the price, usually at set moments such as every 3 months, with at least 1 month's notice, and cancelling costs no fee.
- A dynamic tariff (dynamisch tarief) follows wholesale market prices, with electricity changing every quarter-hour, hour or day and gas changing daily, and a supplier may charge feed-in costs (terugleverkosten) for solar panels, as stated in the contract.
