The KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, warns of dense fog in the northern half of the Netherlands under a code yellow alert. It says the fog can be "very local and treacherous".

Visibility in dense fog is less than 200 metres, and the fog can disrupt traffic. The KNMI says it can persist until Friday morning. Fog can also form elsewhere, it says.

Where visibility is under 200 metres, drivers may switch on their front fog lights. Rear fog lights may only be used when visibility is under 50 metres. Visibility is expected to improve gradually in the second half of Friday morning.
