Emergency services were called to the Sloterweg in Amsterdam Nieuw-West at about 17.20 to 17.30 on Sunday after a report of a person under a fallen tree. A police spokesperson confirmed that a cyclist was found dead there. The tree presumably fell on the man as he was cycling. The spot is near the Amsterdam Velodrome, the indoor cycling track. Many emergency services were sent, including a trauma helicopter.

Storm Boelo, the first autumn storm of the year, swept across the Netherlands on Saturday and Sunday. The weather institute KNMI issued code yellow for part of the country because of wind gusts, valid until 2.00 on Sunday night. The gusts caused dangerous situations and damage in several places.

KNMI also warned of heavy gusts in the coastal areas.

## Background

- **KNMI (Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut)**: The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute is the Dutch national weather service. It measures and forecasts the weather, monitors climate and earthquakes, and issues official weather warnings for the Netherlands. Its warnings are the reference that municipalities, emergency services and the public follow during storms and other severe weather.
- **code geel**: Code yellow is the lowest of the weather warning levels issued by KNMI, below code orange and code red. It is issued when weather such as strong wind, heavy rain or snow may cause some disruption or hazards, and people are advised to pay attention to the forecast and warnings. A code yellow covers a specific region and a set time period.
