The Noordtunnel on the A15 between Alblasserdam and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht will close in both directions from early June to the end of July 2027, about 6.5 weeks, and from 12 May to 17 July 2028. Rijkswaterstaat (the national roads and waterways agency) will replace all of the tunnel's equipment.

**Why it matters**

- 2027: the tunnel will be closed in both directions for about 6.5 weeks, from early June to the end of July.
- 2028: the full closure will run from 12 May to 17 July.
- In both years the tunnel will also close for several weekends to prepare for the work.
- Non-local traffic, such as freight between Germany and the Europoort, is diverted via the N3 and the A16.

Separately, the Papendrechtsebrug on the N3, near Dordrecht, has been closed since 17 July 2026 and will stay shut until 21 April 2027, while Rijkswaterstaat renews the bridge's movable part. No traffic can cross between Papendrecht and Dordrecht, and the cycle path is closed too.

Minister Karremans of Infrastructure and Water Management recently announced that enough money is available for the tunnel renovation to go ahead.

Rijkswaterstaat says the old equipment urgently needs work. Power, emergency power, ventilation, lighting and traffic control will be replaced or improved. The concrete and fire protection, asphalt and expansion joints are also being tackled.

## Background

- **Rijkswaterstaat**: Rijkswaterstaat is the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, responsible for the national main road network, including motorways and their tunnels, and for the main waterways and water defences. It plans, builds, manages and maintains these assets, so it is the body that carries out major works such as tunnel renovations on national roads.
